EDMONTON · CHANNEL LETTERS

Channel letters
that read from the road.

Channel letters are the dimensional, usually illuminated lettering mounted on a building fascia—the most common form of primary storefront identification in Edmonton.

Frontage handles the whole set: letter construction, illumination type, raceway or direct mount, electrical coordination, permit drawings and installation.

Illumination options

01

Front-lit letters

Translucent faces with LED modules inside. The brightest, most legible option from a distance and the standard choice for retail frontage.

02

Halo-lit (reverse-lit) letters

Solid metal faces with light washing the wall behind. A quieter, more premium look that works well on brick, stone and dark cladding.

03

Combination lit

Face and halo illumination together, used where a brand wants presence at distance and detail up close.

04

Non-illuminated letters

Fabricated or cut dimensional letters for interiors, shaded frontages and locations where lighting isn't permitted.

How they're built and mounted

01

Returns and faces

Aluminum returns with acrylic or aluminum faces, finished in your brand colours and trimmed to match.

02

Raceway mounting

Letters and electrical housed in one bar, reducing wall penetrations—often the landlord's preference on leased buildings.

03

Direct / flush mount

Each letter fixed individually to the wall with wiring run behind. The cleanest look where wall access allows it.

04

Backer panels

A finished panel behind the letters, used to unify a set or to cover an older sign's footprint.

05

Electrical

Power supplies, disconnects and circuit coordination arranged with your electrician or ours.

06

Weather detailing

Sealed penetrations, drainage and hardware selected for freeze-thaw cycles and wind load.

Common questions

What is the difference between front-lit and halo-lit letters?

Front-lit letters push light out through a translucent face, so the letter itself glows. Halo-lit (reverse-lit) letters have a solid face and throw light back onto the wall, creating an outline of light around each letter. Front-lit reads better from a distance; halo-lit looks more understated up close.

Do channel letters need a permit in Edmonton?

Exterior wall signage generally requires approval, and illuminated signs bring electrical requirements with them. We identify what applies to your property and handle the application.

What is a raceway and do I need one?

A raceway is a housing that holds the letters, wiring and power supplies as one unit. It simplifies mounting and is often required on leased buildings because it means fewer wall penetrations. Individually mounted letters look cleaner but need more work behind the wall.

How long do the LEDs last?

Commercial-grade LED modules are typically rated for many years of daily use, and power supplies are the component most likely to need service first. We specify modules and supplies rated for outdoor Alberta temperatures.
